Pregnant women with ILI should not be exposed to other pregnant women. This is to reduce transmission to other pregnant women.

Each hospital need to create a separate area in clinic to evaluate pregnant women with ILI, so that these women will be separated from other antenatal/postnatal women during clinic visits.

Pregnant women with ILI who present themselves to Accident & Emergency Department (A&E), will be manage in A&E Department. Medical and Obstetric assessment will be carried as required in A&E Department. Treatment as out-patient or in-patient will decided upon after evaluating the pregnant women.

Pregnant women with ILI who present themselves to labour ward complex will be directed to a special designated area and not the regular PAC/Triage Counter. Medical and Obstetric assessment will be carried out as required at this designated area. Treatment as out-patient or in-patient will decided upon after assessing the pregnant women.

Pregnant women with ILI, who are well and has no co-morbid will be given antiviral therapy (Tamiflu) for 5 days. They will be sent home with advice of danger signs (see appendix A). They will be given a HOTLINE TEL NO to contact whenever necessary (preferably direct labour ward contact number).

Pregnant women with ILI requiring admission for obstetric problems, will be managed in a separate area. Each hospital has to identify such an area.

Pregnant women with ILI resulting in medical complications requiring admission, will be admitted to medical wards.

Antiviral therapy (Tamiflu) will be made available for all suspected/confirmed H1N1 cases.Ensure antiviral therapy stocks are available in labour ward.

Pregnant women with ILI requiring Caesarean section - Ideally Caesarean section should be done in a designated operation theatre, so as not to disrupt the existing Maternity OT.

Pregnant women with ILI who have delivered, need to have their babies separated from them, so as to reduced transmission to their babies. Breastfeeding is NOT CONTRAINDICATED, but proper advice should be given to these mothers regarding breastfeeding. (see appendix B)

On discharge, mothers with ILI will be given proper advice with regards to the care of newborns and breastfeeding at home. (see appendix B)

All pregnant women and visitors coming to maternity and labour ward complex need to be screened for ILI.
